The problem
For far too long the supplementation industry has had a bad reputation. This is somewhat justified with certain scientific studies finding that most of the ingredients in our supplements are not what’s on the bottle. Additionally, contamination of heavy metals in certain supplements are also a substantial problem. For example, this small study found alarming levels of mercury in Tongkat Ali supplements sourced from Malaysia.
With the rise of connivence shopping like Amazon and the low barrier to entry for supplementation companies, the market is saturated with products that are marketed to be good for our health. The problem is that the majority of these companies have little care for their product or customers.
However, there are some great companies in this space who are taking immense care in the sourcing, dosing and handling of their supplements. The real issue becomes, how can we find these companies in such a saturated market and more importantly, how do we know to trust them?
Our solution
Introducing bodylink. Born from my own personal journey in facing this exact problem, we want to shine a light on the companies in this industry that we believe you can trust. Please, don’t just take our word for it.
We want to introduce transparency between our users and the companies we recommend. To do this, we will first request and then share third party testing results from all manufacturers you see listed on bodylink. Companies that provide validated test results will have a prioritised position in our ‘recommended’ algorithm. These products will be marked, highlighted and made clear with links to view and download test results.
We hope this easy exchange of value will create transparency and trust within the supplementation industry and most importantly keep you and your families safe.
Release notes - Version 1.0
Version 1.0 of our website features supplements we believe are important compounds for health and lifespan. These are foundational supplements like Omega-3 fatty acids and Creatine that have a wealth of published research. Our initial list also features some newer supplements to gain popularity like Tongkat Ali and Magnesium L-Theronate. It’s important for us to be able to share trusted sources of new supplements as their popularity is an opportunity for companies to sell product without the necessary care.
In the works for version 1.2
Whilst continuing our work with brands to requesting and validating their third party testing certificates, we want to improve our service and add more value. The following tasks are on our initial roadmap for version 1.2.
1. Health outcome pages
Some people already know what type of supplement they're looking for and just need to find a trusted source. Other people will be earlier on in their journey and just know what the outcome is they would like to improve. For this reason, we plan to group all of the latest research into health outcomes like 'supplements that may aid athletic performance' or 'supplements to reduce stress'. These pages may act as a better starting resource for some people. As with our supplement pages, we will display groups of trusted sources to any recommendations we discuss.
2. Surveys Studies
We plan to create and manage detailed supplement surveys, where our readers can inform us how certain supplements have worked or not worked for them. We plan to annually release reports with our findings to create a large body of anecdotal data that our users can utilise to make informed decisions about supplementation.
3. New supplement pages
- 5-HTP
- Alpha GPC
- Apigenin
- Coznitig
- Inositol
- L-Theanine
- L-Tyrosine
- Macca
- Magnesium Malate & Magnesium Citrate
- Panax Ginsing
